The Book of John

4 March 2006

Which includes John, Johnny or Johnnie, and friends as appropriate. (I drew the line at “Johnson,” because it seemed to be an unnecessary complication, and at “John Denver,” because it was, well, John Denver.) An unusually-minimalist cover, but then, I was going for timelessness.

Two-Minute Warning

19 February 2006

An overreaction, perhaps, to the Superlong series: these are songs that weigh in at 2:00 or less. (The shortest is “Bluebirds Over the Mountain,” which runs a mere 1:27.) The cover photo was derived from one of those zillions of Worth1000.com Photoshop contests.

You Can Drive My Car

22 January 2006

The objective here was to fill up a CD-R of car songs without having to resort to either “Freeway of Love” or “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” both of which are incredibly long and seem even longer. In some of these, the automobiles seem more metaphoric than motorized, which doesn’t bother me at all. There are two Beach Boys tracks, two by Jan and Dean, and two by Chuck Berry, which seems reasonable; the title, of course, comes from the Beatles.

Everybody Must Get Stones

4 December 2005

At some point I must have decided that I needed a single-disc Rolling Stones compilation, and this is it. About half these tracks are in mono, either because that’s all there is or because I thought it sounded better than the stereo. (I don’t think there’s ever going to be a really good-sounding “Have You Seen Your Mother Baby.”) David Osborne took the cover photo at Boulder Rock in Western Australia.
