Mid-60s Mania: Volume 9

15 October 2005

The ninth in a series that isn’t even starting to slow down. The cover art (from Belle-Sharmeer) is slightly anachronistic, but not by much, and the appeal, of course, is timeless — much like these tunes. I wrote a piece on the compilation of this very disc, which you can read here.

Remember Then

11 October 2005

This disc, which I plan to use to start a series, grew out of a cassette series I had done in the 1990s called “Old Mold,” seven tapes full of pre-Beatles material, plus tapes dedicated to each of the years 1961 through 1963. I have no doubt that I could come up with a dozen such discs easily. And assuming I don’t run out, all of them will have artwork similar to this, drawings done for the Belle-Sharmeer hosiery brand, which presumably expired around the time pantyhose arrived.

Deborah Forever

9 October 2005

Deborah Ann Gibson is thirty-five years old. She’s done Broadway, she’s done TV spots, she’s done a Playboy pictorial. So forget that teen-pop princess business, even if that’s where she made her name; it’s only half of this compilation. (Okay, the first half, but still.) I’m not sure where the cover photo came from, though I suspect it was circulated among fan-club members.

DC5

8 October 2005

Twenty-two thumping hits by the Dave Clark Five. Clark owns his own masters, and doesn’t let them out onto the market very often, so I figured I ought to have a compilation of my own. Rather a lot of these are taken from stereo vinyl in preference to mono CD issues. The plane? Well, it was a big deal when the Five had their own aircraft for a US tour back in the day, though it certainly wasn’t this plane, which is in fact a DC6.

Cover art, Wendex 111096-2Track listing for 111096-2 (all tracks by the Dave Clark Five):

Mid-60s Mania: Volume 8

4 October 2005

I never seem to run out of this stuff, although clearly there must be an upper limit somewhere. Our cover girl is brandishing some BVDs, from a period when BVD was trying to establish itself as a manufacturer of hosiery.

Valentine’s Day Mix

2 October 2005

I wrote this up in 2004 as a suggested mix tape, covering both the glorious and the excruciating aspects of romance, but it was more than a year before I got around to committing it to disc. In the process, the list grew by two songs, the better to use up the available space on the now-standard 80-minute CD-R. The fellow falling off the left edge is undoubtedly smitten by the contents of those Cannon stockings.

That 70s Stuff: Volume 4

1 October 2005

Still more Seventies tunes; since most of these tracks seem to date from the early Seventies, I threw in a late-1980 track (the Joan Jett) for alleged balance. The cover babe? According to the ad copy, “Nobody does more for legs than Burlington.”
